Jiahui's assignment3

I would like to say Amir and Hassan relate more like master and servant. A strong evidence exists in chapter 5: When they ran into Assef unfortunately and faced to menace, Amir almost blurted "he's not my friend" and "he's my servant". Thus, there's no doubt that in Amir's mind, Hassan was his servant but not a friend. Someone may say Amir treated Hassan well as if they were friends even brothers. If so, why did Amir "play with Hassan only when no one else was around"? I'm regret to say Hassan was just in his role as a servant, who could be in company with his master, Amir, when he was alone and kept him from loneliness. Another instance in chapter 6 is that one day when they ran a kite and waited it under a tree, Amir doubted whether Hassan would eat dirt if he told him to do it. Hassan remained silent for a long time and finally said:"If you asked, I would." Those words Hassan said expressed a servant's loyalism. Therefore, not only Amir thought Hassan was a servant but also Hassan himself thought like that. In a word, their relationship is the connection between a master and a servant.

  1. I have to say I agree with you, I think even they do a lot of things together, look like friend or brother, but in fact their relationship is a master and a servant.

  2. I think hierarchy of the society in which they existed was a constant gap between between they. They were supposed to be friends even brothers but this gap could not be overcome.

  4. In my opinion when you said,” why did Amir "play with Hassan only when no one else was around"? It doesn’t means that Hassan was his servant!!!!
I think in this world every people have a lot of friend that they are just friend not close as someone you can tell he or she is real and close one. And you want one of them for talking with, one of them for having fun, one of them for playing and etc. Maybe Amir didn't play with Hassan when other boys were there but why Amir spent most of his time with Amir??

  5. Anna, haven't you realized Hassan's position was quite low? He's the very last person who was considered by Amir. Can't the fact convince you?
Besides, you asked me why "Amir spent most of his time with Amir(maybe you wanna type "Hassan":))". The answer to your question is because no one else was around Amir, he had no alternative but to spend his time with his servant. If not, what could he do?

  6. Jiahui, good insights and good argument. Please remember that there is not just ONE right answer to this question! If you support your argument well, it is more important than whether your answer is "correct." And please try to be polite to your classmates in your responses! I am glad to see some lively debate, but don't make it personal.

  7. Jiahui - one English usage correction - you say "I regret to say" instead of "I'm regret to say."
