I think their relationship a bit complicated,on the surface, Ali and Hassan are Amir family's labourer, but Ali grew up with Amir's father,Amir's grandfather to treat Ali like his own son,Amir and Hassan were same situation like their's father,Amir's father always tell Amir that Ali like brother with him,but Amir's father never said that to his guests.but when Amir and Hassan are little child
they do not have class consciousness .as chapter 4 said “But we were kids who had learned to crawl together, and nohistory, ethnicity, society,or religion ........" until these time Amir always as friend with Hassan, never think another relationship with Hassan. But when they met Assef, this racialism man.Assef tell him alot,so he began to comfuse, when Assef want to beat him he almost blurted“But he's not my friend! i almost blurted.Hs's my servant!had i really thought that?" and then from now he think a lot like did Hassan really friend with me ? why did i play with hassan only when no one else was around"
with age grow up Amir and Hassan have to change their purity of heart,Amir became think he is Hassan's master, naturally Hassan's became think he is Amir's servant.
In a word children are pure no one can control who they like or do not like ,include Hassan and Amir.no one can prevent them from friends.but they grow up they have to study new things, their point of view will be the impact of society at that time.so before chapter 5 they always as friends or brother but after chapter 5 their relationship will began to gradually broke up.

Li - Wow! You blew me away with this entry. You are right on the money about Amir's perspective changing as he gets older and especially as he encounters his racist peers (Assef). You also really raise a good point bringing Baba and Ali's relationship up, too. Good job!
