Jiahui's assignment 6
My topic is today's Shanghai plays an important role both at home and abroad. I chose it as my topic because my hometown, Suzhou(or Soochow), is quite closed to Shanghai. Thus, I fimilar with it. Besides, since it's more and more popular in the world, there's something to talk about indeed. My stance is affirmative on this topic. I think it's true that Shanghai has such a position.

Jiahui, this would be a good topic for an informative or expository essay, but it is not a good topic for an argumentative essay. You need to choose an ISSUE that has two distinct sides. The role of Shanghai is NOT an issue that you can argue for or against. Obviously, Shanghai is a city that plays an important role in China and abroad. This is not an argument, it is a statement of fact. You need to find a topic that is controversial and can be debated either for or against. You can choose an issue related to China such as China's one-child policy - are you for or against this? But your topic of Shanghai is not good for a persuasive argument.
